Girl Child Advocacy
Child marriage and gender-based violence still shape too many futures for girls in Uganda before they've had the chance to choose otherwise. Maisha works to change the odds.
Nationally, HIV prevalence among young Ugandan women aged 15–24 runs nearly four times higher than among young men the same age — and young women who've experienced intimate partner violence are significantly more likely to have acquired HIV than those who haven't. Behind those numbers is a simple gap: too many girls lack access to education, health services, and accurate information about their own bodies.
Maisha's girl child advocacy work tackles that gap directly — sexual health education, awareness campaigns that challenge child marriage, and support for girls navigating gender-based violence or abuse. We work alongside families and local leaders, because change that lasts has to include the people around a girl, not just the girl herself.
This programme runs alongside Maisha Girl Child, our donation campaign providing sanitary kits and school-fee support — together they cover both the immediate and the structural barriers girls face.
